Letter from Mr J Christian, Principal
30th August 2017
Dear Parents, Carers, and Students,
Significantly improved GCSE results.
I hope you have all had a wonderful and relaxing summer break. I would like to congratulate the 'old' Year 11 cohort on their success in their GCSE results. Last week's results show significant improvements from last year and early analysis suggests that we have performed better than the national average in both English, Mathematics and in a further 14 other subjects. We have achieved a higher average attainment score compared with 2016 results however, as you are aware from the press and the news, we are advised not to compare them. The 'new' examinations are more rigorous than previous GCSE examinations and are more comparable to the old 'O' levels, if any of you remember them. English and Mathematics are graded on a new 9-1 scale, with the top grade 9 being equivalent to an A**, 8 an A* and 7 an A. The majority of subjects have seen huge increases in the number of these top grades awarded. All schools have to wait a further few weeks until the overall progress scores are produced and released, but all provisional headline figures are improved from last year, despite the examinations being more rigorous.
I am delighted that the hard work of students and staff has been rewarded; these results evidence the improvements made by the school and the strong trajectory that we on. I have personally worked very closely with these students over the last two years and know how hard the majority of them have worked. We have achieved some fantastic results, with 9 students achieving the prestigious grade 9 in Mathematics and 8 students in English. In addition, over 12% of students achieved at least a grade 7 in both English and Mathematics and several students achieved the equivalent of an A/A* in every subject. Our students have achieved the results that they deserved, and I wish them all the very best in their next stage, be it higher education, an apprenticeship or other further training.
I am looking forward to the new academic year ready to build on these successes and accelerate the rate of progress of all students.
Enjoy the rest of the holiday.
J Christian (Mr)
