Colne Valley High School employ two Careers Advisers to support the students with Careers Advice and Guidance and ensure they make informed decisions regarding their Post 16 choices.

All students in Years 8 - 11 are enabled to develop the skills needed to make informed decisions and to develop their employability so they make successful transitions post-16. We engage proactively with our local further education and work-based learning providers. Termly Business Breakfast events ensure regular two way communication with local employers. Through our comprehensive careers and employer engagement approach our students are able:

Year 7

The Real Game

Year 7 will use the Real Game programme which is a career exploration tool during the Careers SPACE Day.

Records of Achievement

Year 7 will be given a Record of Achievement which can be used to identify their achievements, skills and areas for further development.

Drop In Sessions

Drop in sessions available at the careers office every day at break and lunch.

Spotlight Sessions

Year 7 will be given the opportunity to attend spotlight sessions.

Year 8

Year 9 Careers Fair

Year 8 will have the opportunity to visit the Year 9 Careers Fair and explore career areas.

Spotlight Sessions

Year 8 will be given the opportunity to attend spotlight sessions.

Year 8 will have a Record of Achievement which can be used to identify their achievements, skills and areas for further development.

Year 9

Tutor Programme

Half Term 2 – CIAG Preparation for the Careers Fair.

Half Term 3 – KS4 Guided Choices interviews and look at life assemblies.

Year 9 Careers Fair

Year 9 will organise a Careers Fair for Years 8. This will enable them to explore the options available to them and assist them in making their guided choices.

Fast Tomato

Year 9 will use Fast Tomato to help them identify their skills and interests and also potential career areas. This will be completed during Form Time.

Year 9 will have a Record of Achievement which can be used to identify their achievements, skills and areas for further development.

Guided Choices Evening

Careers Advisers will be available at Guided Choices Evening to provide support and information to students and parents.

Spotlight Sessions

Year 9 will be given the opportunity to attend appropriate spotlight sessions.

Drop In Sessions

Drop in sessions available at the careers office every day at break and lunch.

A Careers Adviser will be present for all EHCP reviews for Year 9 students.

Year 10

Tutor Programme – topics that will be covered in form time.

CIAG, what is work experience and what to expect.

CIAG, work experience applications and finding an employer.

Health and Safety at work during assembly.

Employment rights and responsibilities.

Careers in Health and Social Care Presentation

Delivered to the Year 10 Health and Social Care classes.

Year 10 Parents Evening

Careers Advisers will be available at Parents Evening to provide support and information to students and parents.

SEN Reviews

A Careers Adviser is present at all relevant meetings.

Spotlight Sessions

Year 10 will be given the opportunity to attend all spotlight sessions.

Year 10 Guidance Session

All Year 10 will have an introductory meeting with a Careers Adviser in the Spring or Summer Term, this will be either a group work session or individual meeting.

Personal Statements and CV’s

Year 10 complete personal statements and CV’s in preparation for making college applications in Year 11, finding apprenticeships and part time work.

Year 10 Taster Days

Year 10 students will be given the opportunity to attend taster days at Greenhead College, Huddersfield New College and The Creative and Media Studio School and Kirklees College.

University Visits

Identified students will be given the opportunity to attend a visit to The University of Huddersfield to explore Higher Education. This will be aimed at students who may not be considering HE or who we feel need to raise their aspirations.

Russell Group University visit -More able students will be invited to an overnight visit to The University of Oxford and a day visit to The University of Cambridge.

STEM Conference

More able students invited to the STEM Conference at Huddersfield New College.

Work Experience

Year 10 will take part in preparation work for work experience including finding their own placement.

Year 11

Tutor Programme – delivered in form time

CIAG, UCAS Progress – completing their online profile and making college applications.

Moving On Programme

All Year 11 will use the Moving On Programme in form time to support them in making appropriate post 16 transitions.

Year 11 Parents Evening and Information Evening

Careers Advisers will be available at Parents Evenings to provide support and information to students and parents.

Year 11 parents will receive an information leaflet with details of the careers support available and key dates to be aware of in Year 11.

Kirklees College Taster Sessions

Year 11 students will be given the opportunity to attend taster sessions at Kirklees College.

Mock Interviews

All Year 11 will have a mock interview with a college, training provider or employer.

Assemblies

The local colleges will be invited in to assembly to deliver a presentation on the options available to student’s post 16.

College Interviews

Interviews with the partner colleges will be delivered in school where possible.

Year 11 Work Experience

All Year 11 students will take part in one week of work experience.

Following some simple but powerful assessments, Fast Tomato offers a wealth of career, course and subject information, coupled with independent adviser support, to inspire students and to help them make informed decisions about their future. In Year 11 all students will use UCAS Progress to make their college applications and search for college courses. Your child will receive a username and password to access the site in Year 11.
