Transition 2021

Information for Year 6 students starting in September 2021 (Updated July 2021)

Welcome from the Principal - Mr J Christian

It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself as the Principal of Colne Valley High School.  It is a privilege to lead such a fantastic school and I am extremely proud of the progress and improvements made within the school in recent years.

Everyone at Colne Valley High School strives to be ‘Exceptional, every day’ and this vision is embedded in the way we work as a school community.  We strongly believe that there is direct correlation between levels of aspiration and student outcomes; we set our students no limits to what they can achieve.  When aspiration is high, students will become the best that they can be.

Alongside this we endeavor to create well-rounded, happy and confident young people who are able to contribute positively within society.  I am a firm believer that our school values of Respect, Integrity, Team Work and Aspiration (RITA) are the most appropriate foci to enable our students to achieve this.

Some of our current Year 7 students have created fun and informative resources to support students in Year 6 with their transition to us. The resources are featured on this page below the parent information section.

We have now been able to announce that we will be going ahead with our traditional transition week.  This will be Monday 19th July to Friday 23rd July.  Please see the letter in the letters section below for further details.

I am proud of our school, our students. staff and community. I believe we are a team and together we are stronger.

Miss Pejica Welcome from Miss Pejica - Year 7 Achievement Co-ordinator

Welcome new year 7 - I am extremely excited to welcome you to Colne Valley High School.

I have been a teacher at Colne Valley High School since 2013 and I am currently Head of Drama. I teach Drama and Dance and work with the Performing Arts team to offer an extensive extra-curriculum timetable, including school shows and musicals. I have also worked closely alongside Achievement Co-ordinators to ensure students receive an enriching school experience.

I am committed to my role here at Colne Valley High School and always endeavour to ensure students are aspirational and happy, through our RITA Values.

I look forward to meeting all students during our transition week.

Transition Programme

In order to promote a smooth and positive transition to Colne Valley High School, the following is in place as part of our structured transition programme: *subject to government guidance

  • Our Year 7 Student Information survey gives students and parents the opportunity to let us know of any initial issues or concerns about moving up - see copy of letter above sent on the 14th May 2021.

  • A visit to primary schools by Mr Christian and SENDCO to meet the students, and to meet students from our larger feeder primary schools. *Subject to change

  • A Transition Week in July is planned allowing students to experience a taster of a normal day/week at CVHS, and to meet their fellow students.

  • An experienced and highly skilled team of staff to tutor Year 7 - generally these tutors remain tutors for Year 7 right through to Year 11 to build and maintain strong and positive working relationships with students and stakeholders.

  • Year 7 wear a bespoke year group tie to the rest of the school enabling them to be identified quickly by staff or other students to assist them as necessary - see parent information

  • The introduction of a resilience/RITA (our school values) training programme through Tutor Time.

  • Mindfulness sessions offered to anxious students.

Your Child's First Day

  • On your child’s first day at Colne Valley High School, currently planned for *Tuesday 7th September 2021, Year 7 students will meet at 8:40am as a year group, and will spend period 1 in a welcome assembly, and period 2 with form tutor *date subject to change

  • PE kit - please note that students are required to bring their PE kit on the first day of term. If students are timetabled PE for their first day, their teacher will talk them through the activities that they will be doing.

  • One-to-one (confirm) support for those identified to have additional requirements, i.e. SEND, anxiety.

  • In line with all other year groups, Year 7 students will have their own bespoke break and lunchtimes.

  • During Week 1, the school day finishes at 3pm for Year 7 students, allowing them an additional time to find their friends, or the relevant bus stop or lift home.

  • All the above is subject to change due to the current extenuating circumstances around the Covid 19 Outbreak. We will communicate any variance in advance of change.

Some advice from our current Year 7 students to New Year 6

Moving up to a new school can be quite daunting but there is nothing to worry about. Some of our Year 7 students have taken the time to give some advice to help with the process.
